A&A Note: My gg grandparents, Joseph & Mary HERNIGLE came from Bohemia ca. 1867. They had two children in Illinois and then moved to Medaryville, IN. My first question is: was Chicago a port of entry for immigrants? Or was it the last leg of the journey from an east coast port (Maine, Vermont, NY?)? My second question is: does anyone know the state of immigration records in ca. 1867? I assume they aren't as good as later records. Thanks for any help you can give!!

A&A Note: I recently visited the Czech Republic to find the villages where my ancestors lived. In one I found a church that was 450 years old but none of the graves dated much before 1900. I am wondering if anyone knows more about Czech cemeteries and can tell me where the bodies are buried. I would appreciate an e-mail answer. Thanks!

From: Mary Ann Duczer Privat - MAEJP@aol.com

A&A Note: My father, DUCZER Janos, immigrated to the U.S. about 1905 (could be earlier or a few years later). He lived in Joliet, Illinois, in a boarding house, for a short while before moving to Louisiana. I believe that he met his first wife there HUDAK Anna (Annie). I do not know if he married her in Illinois or if they married in Louisiana. My father and his first wife moved to Louisiana, along with all of the HUDAK family. They had 4 children: Margaret b. 1908; Janos b. 1909; Elizabeth b. 1911; and Julia b. 1912. After his first wife died, he married my mother and they had 4 children. Does anyone recognize the name DUCZER or HUDAK? Does anyone have knowledge of such a boarding house in that time period (1906 to 1909)? How can I find if there was a marriage in that county of Illinois with those names? Any help or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

A&A Note: I failed to mention in my earlier posting that my father DUCZER Janos emmigrated from Nyirbator, Hungary. He was baptized in the Greek Catholic Church in Kisleta, Hu. My father's mother's surname was HREBENAK. I believe that my grandparents may have originated in KRAJNE CIERNO, Slovakia.

A&A Note: 2 questions: Besides the Bohemian National Cemetery, are there any other Bohemian cemeteries in Chicago (or the Cicero suburb)? 2) Where would a Bohemian who lived on the 7400-block of St. Lawrence go to church around the turn of the century? Please e-mail responses ASAP; I'd like to go to Chicago and visit some of these places later this month if I can get enough info to make the trip worthwhile! Thanks!!

A&A Note: Attention WEST VIRGINIA researchers! If you have ancestors who immigrated early in the century to work in the first WEIRTON STEEL MILL in CLARKSBURG, WV or work in the mines, you may be interested to know Mom & I have self-published a book about the community surrounding this steel mill, which later moved to Weirton, WV. It is called "Summit Park - It All Began on Murphy's Run". It is 326 pages about this small "melting pot" community, with lots of photos, plus index. In 1996, we printed only a few hundred copies, and we'll be doing another printing in a few months, depending on how many orders we get. Price will be around $30. Mom (Mary Sprouse) saved clippings, wrote letters, telephoned to gather information, street by street, house by house, and combined this with the information I gathered researching vital statistics - censuses, maps, land records, birth/death information. There are anecdotes, church history profiles, military stories, schools, & tragedies.

From: Bev Aylor - baylor@ns.gemlink.com

A&A Note: I have a copy, dated 1932, of my Great Uncle's original baptismal certificate. The family sent to Europe for it in 1932. I would like to contact the Mayor of the town where the church was/is located to try to get information regarding the family. The name of the town is spelled Potehac and Poteh. Which is correct? Do I need further clarification as to a county or district? The certificate seems to have been filed in County Caslav (Politicky Okres) in the Circuit Court: Caslav (Soudnl Okres:). The next line reads Misto narozeni: Tupadly #27; then cislo domu: Tupadly #27. I gather my GreatGF lived in "Tupadel". There is additional information regarding my GGM as having lived in Ostruzna #5, I assume before marriage. Whoever sent this document to my GU apparantly added information other than what would normally be entered in the original document. What are the proper names of the towns and what is the proper way of addressing the envelope to assure the delivery of same? I'm sure this document gave the family a great deal of information in 1932, since they understood the language. Today, I am thoroughly confused by it. I would appreciate any help you can provide. Thank you very much.

A&A Note: I am not a member, but would like to know if any members have information regarding the Barosko family in Chicago. A Thomas Barosko who lived at 1919 Halsted in the 1920's to early 1940's was a mortician, and is related (oldest brother of my grandfather). Are there other Baroskos in the Chicago area?

A&A Note: Dear Mr. Barosko, You did not list your e-mail address when you posted the above message. I am replying in this section but think the proper way to do it is by private e-mail. Go to the Web Site at: http://www.four11.com/ and do a telephone search for the surname and you will find a list of 13 (with addresses and telepone numbers). All of them live in Michigan or Wisconsin. Only one lives in a far Chicago suburb (Naperville). Good Luck

A&A Note: I am a native of Vienna, Austria. My ancestors were glassblowers from the Czech and Lower Austria regions, now still living in Altnagelberg where there is a glass factory. My mother's maiden name and my grandmother's name was FRIEDL. That Friedl family came from the Austro-Hungarian Czech/Bohemian area. Language difficulties have made it impossible for me to find the FRIEDL-connection. Can you assist? The glassblowers stayed usually right around the factories. Thank you for any help. Helene Riley

With the disks should have been instructions for borrowing the films at your local library via inter-library loan. I have ordered several films when I lived in California and the process works quite well. You merely give the librarian the date of the paper (there may be a small fee associated) and they order the film.

Anyhow, if a fellow member would be willing to do a rubbing and give me the information off of the stone (I could only make the names out), I'd be happy to give you $20 for your time + cost of materials. The stone is easy to find. I don't know when I'll be back there again, thus my problem...thanks!!!

A&A Note: Charlotte's (cnorden@ix.netcom.com) entry of Aug 27, 1998 at 14:30 asked, "I've had great luck with the Denni obituaries, and began to wonder: does anyone know if marriage or birth announcements were also published? Also, the obits always list various brother/sisterhoods the deceased was involved in. Has anyone had any luck getting further info from any of these groups, if they still exist? Thanks!" --> My experience has been very positive in this regard. For example, my great-grandfather had a sort of locket or fob with the initials WMA or MWA, depending on how you looked at it. The obituary in the Dennia Hlasatel indicated he was a member of the "Modern Woodmen on America" (MWA). I sent a note to them and they furnished me with all the info regarding his policy: how much it was and to whom paid, etc... Of course I can't speak for *all* fraternal organizations, but the MWA is still around and were very helpful. They also have a web page, by the way: http://www.modern-woodmen.org/aboutusf.htm

A&A Note: John Turner's (jtsna@mindspring.com) entry of Aug 30, 1998 at 16:48 asked, "I am in search of information on a steve(?) Bronesky who lived in the chicago area and painted art work under the name of bronk. This was my grandfather and I would like to find info about him any suggestions would help childrens' names were Sophie, Hellen, Steve. Thank you." --> I suggest you review the Chicago City Directories available at the Chicago Historical Society, the Newberry Library and other sources. They list residents and their occupations. For a friend, I researched a gentleman who was a professional musician. Adjacent entries in the city directory revealed others at the same address were music and voice teachers. One even specialized in helping teach English to foreigners. There's a lot of good information in those directories. Good luck.

He spoke Slovak but on his application for a Social Securtiy card his place of birth is listed as Austria. I was wondering if this was a recording error. Also does anyone know the tradition of naming sons? Does a name ending in ski mean the son of? And would this just apply to the oldest son? Thanks for you help.

A&A Note: The custom described above (entry of Barb, 27 Sep) is called 'Mikulas' -- after the main character. (Mikulas is a Czech variant of Nicholas.) It is still held in the Czech Republic today and is actually very popular. Mikulas comes on the evening of December 5 with Devil and Angel (3 people dressed in costume; Mikulas would remind you of Santa Claus, Devil and Angel are self explanatory). Traditionally, he brings candies/fruits for good children and potatoes/coal for disobedient ones. Devil plays the scary part -- he has a chain (noisy) and big bag (to take away bad kids; never happens though). Angel is a comforter. Mikulas can either come 'in person': then children are required to answer his questions (Have you been a good boy? etc.) and sometimes sing a song or say a short poem. I would imagine something like that in church also. However, I don't know the details since I'm not a catholic. In other families, children just put their bowls on an outside window ledge right before dusk. Then they find their bowls full of candies/fruits. Nowdays in bigger cities, they have a mask contest for Mikulases and their *helpers*; ususally on the main square in downtown. There may be some local variations.
